Black River Gumbo Stout

Black River Gumbo Stout

Our latest seasonal offering debut’s just in time for Christmas!

This dark deliciousness is named after the gumbo dirt of the Des Moines River bottom which nourished our Peace Tree and is now used as the surface for Knoxville’s famous Sprint Car track.  Instead of using traditional ale yeast required of a stout, a Belgian yeast was used to add complexity.  This stout is brewed with high quality pale malt, three roasted malts and two caramel malts.  The dark roasted caramel malts contribute to the chocolate and toffee characteristics. Three varieties of hops contribute to the bitterness and aromas of this beer.

It heads out to stores this week in 6 packs but not your typical 6 packs.  Because it is a small run, we thought we’d experiment a little with the packaging.  So this time we are using a recycled plastic 6 pack ring.  It reduces the amount of packaging and shows off our good looking bottles.

And if you really want a treat, stop by the taproom because we have it on a nitrogen tap…..mmmm!!  And the added bonus is that you get to watch the beautiful cascading action.

I wish I knew where I could buy your beers in Iowa (near Des Moines) as they make me VERY excited and thirsty!

I got my first 6 pack o gumbo 30 min after it was dropped off (or so I was told) at the 42nd hyvee, and i could hardly contain my giddyness….but well I just thought it would have more legs, more sweetness, more abv. I for sure could taste and smell the hops but not as much malt as I expected, and it was just a little to smokey/ashy for me.
I thought it was going to be a imperial stout. Am I wrong for thinking this? Maybe im just being selfish(all the me me’s and I I’s). I hope that you guys/gals value a BIG fans opinion like mine.
I can’t wait to see whats next from Peacetree. Id love to hear what you think about what I think.

I see that you guys are maybe saying that its a imperial?? but it didnt seem like it to me. maybe I dont know the difference please enlighten me.

  5. Megan says:

The Black River Gumbo Stout is not an imperial. It is just a belgian style stout for easy drinking in these long cold winter months. We will have an imerial stout out in about a month as a part of our Brewer’s Special Release series. This will be a higher proof, heftier brew. Watch here for updates and thanks for your support!

Can’t find any better IPA than the Hop Wrangler. It is my favorite, but like the double IPA even more.

    Keep up the great work
